Amigo means “friend” in Spanish

A friend to the community, Christ United Methodist Church and some very hard-working volunteers just completed the annual Amigos Days program. We have been participating in this Mission program for 11 successive years. This program connects urban and suburban churches by reaching into urban neighborhoods to restore and revitalize homes and businesses.

Mike Walker and the PACE Sunday school class worked on the house of Thelma Crawford, a 90 year old widow who lives alone in the Oak Cliff area. Our team replaced rotted wood on the house, rebuilt the back porch, repaired the garage door and added a fresh coat of paint to her house.

A few miles away, Bob Hill, members of the Passages Sunday school class & other CUMC volunteers joined forces with Kessler Park UMC to repair the house of Clark Kaufman. Siding replacement, a rebuilt water heater closet and a new coat of paint helped this house to sparkle again.

Both of our families were grateful and appreciative of our help. Neighbors were inspired to come and visit with us and share the fellowship. CUMC was one of 32 churches that worked on 28 homes and 4 inner city churches in this project. Oak Cliff UMC, our host church, received a redo of the playground (the only one in the area), fresh paint in the Sunday school rooms and a refinish of the floor in the fellowship hall. Similar projects were completed at Pleasant Mound UMC, the Jubilee Park area, and Christ Foundry church. Materials for the homes were provided by People Helping People, a city of Dallas program and donations from the churches provided for the projects at the inner city churches. Gracias to everyone who participated.
